Attention train travelers: Get ready for some serious savings with your family and friends, but make sure you read the fine print before you hit “purchase.”
Amtrak announced a new “Share Fares” discount on Wednesday, which will let customers buy tickets in a group at a discount. Customers can save up to 35% on tickets when traveling in groups of up to four people.
Here’s a breakdown of how much each rider will pay:
- First customer: Full price
- Second customer: 15% off
- Third customer: 60% off
- Fourth customer: 70% off
The promotion, using promo code V291, is available for purchase on Amtrak’s Northeast Regional line (Washington, D.C. to Boston) as well as routes across its national network. These routes include the California Zephyr, the City of New Orleans, the Southwest Chief and more.
Now for the caveats: Travelers taking the Acela Express and Auto Train cannot apply this discount. The discount will be automatically applied to the standard fair price.
Passengers should not book roundtrip tickets in order to get the discount. They have to purchase two one-way tickets but can still get the deal on both trips.
It only applies to coach seats and riders can’t combine it with other discounts. Also, depending on demand and limited inventory, the discount might not be available for every train or date.
The new discounts launch on April 24 but only become valid on April 27, as travelers have to book their reservation at least three days in advance. There’s no end date for the sale.
Amtrak is looking for creatives to join its social media residency program.
