The NCAA basketball championship was last week’s most-watched program. but “Game of Thrones” ranked first in homes with same-sex couples. This week, Nielsen begins releasing weekly program rankings for that group, part of its long-range effort to diversify measurement.
While Monday’s NCAA basketball championship averaged 19.7 million same-day TV viewers nationally, and “Thrones” claimed 11.8 million, in same sex homes “Thrones” led with 191,000 to about 177,000 for “Thrones,” Nielsen said in data shared first with USA TODAY.
And while three CBS series – “NCIS,” “60 Minutes” and new drama “The Code” – rounded out the top five among all viewers, the list in same-sex homes included “Survivor” (121,000) and “NCIS” (116,000), along with ABC’s “Modern Family” (95,000).
Cable news and the “RuPaul’s Drag Race” franchise were also widely watched in same-sex households. MSNBC’s “The Rachel Maddow Show” (66,000) and “All In with Chris Hayes” (34,000) both ranked among the top 5 cable series for the week, along with VH1’s “Drag Race” (64,000) and its companion show “Untucked” (66,000).
Nielsen estimates there are about 2.5 million same-sex households. The new measurement includes only couples, not LGBTQ viewers who live alone, because of the way that demographic data is collected about members of Nielsen panels. The ratings service eventually hopes to include individuals in the sample, but is sensitive to privacy concerns.
Along with same-sex homes, Nielsen also tracks viewership among African Americans and Hispanics.
