Kristen Bell and Dax Shepard are frequently lauded for being #CoupleGoals, but the famous duo opened up about the work they put into their relationship behind the scenes.
“This isn’t a special fairytale,” Bell, 38 recently told Parade.
“This is two people who worked really hard,” added Shepard, 44. “It’s attainable for you if you work really hard in your marriage, too.”
Shepard said they’ve helped change each other for the better over the years. He’s “less naive, 10 times nicer,” and she’s now “better with boundaries.”
Bell noted that they were polar opposites upon first meeting: “I believed the whole world was filled with sheep and he believed the whole world was filled with wolves,” she said.
Bell and Shepard, who began dating over 11 years ago and married in an intimate courthouse setting in 2009, now have two children: Lincoln, 5, and Delta, 4.
Their home life is pretty relatable: Lincoln is currently a big fan of building forts out of couch cushions, which Bell says only contributes to a chaotic household. “We’re behind on laundry, our house is a mess, there’s dog hair that we’re trying to constantly Swiffer,” she said.
One major key to maintaining their relationship amid hectic schedules? Making time to be together, even if it’s just to stay in and watch TV.
“We’ve probably had nine (date nights) in the last six years, if we’re being honest,” Shepard said, adding that they prefer low-key hangouts at home. “We play board games and the kids destroy the house and that’s just a fun Sunday.”
