Yep, that was a bodega owner with a singing bodega cat and a trio of oompa loompas.
One of the highlights of last year’s John Mulaney-hosted episode was Pete Davidson asking for the uncommon lobster dinner at a local diner. This time around, Davidson needed the key for the rarely used bathroom at a bodega.
What happens next includes a musical parody with Willy Wonka’s oompa loompas and a new version of a song from the musical “Rent” about the “Bodega of Love.”
The bodega’s owner (Mulaney) hands Davidson the key to the bathroom, attached to a cinder block, leading to the musical interludes introduced by Kenan Thompson dressed in a cat costume.
Then it gets a little weird.
“Come with me and you’ll be in a world of zero sanitation,” the singing cat warns.
The walls open to show Cecily Strong and Melissa Villasenor dressed as cockroaches inside the disgusting bathroom and Kate McKinnon as a walking candle from the shelf who comes to save Davidson from the grossness.
And that’s when the oompa loompas show up.
It wraps up with a list of all the random items on the shelves of the bodega to the tune of “Seasons of Love” from “Rent” as the cockroaches, cat and candle follow the oompa loompas off the stage.
We’re still not sure if that is a group of people we would want to follow, but it would at least give us an excuse to get out of that bodega.
