A photo of “View” host Joy Behar dressed as a “beautiful African woman” is resurfacing amidst numerous blackface scandals.
The most prominent theory circulating on Twitter, however, is that that Academy Award-winning actress has been secretly tapped to host the Oscars for the fifth time. “The View” has long said Goldberg is out sick, but that hasn’t put the theories to bed.
User Peter Knegt speculated: “Whoopi Goldberg’s absence from The View (she’s sick, they say) since the day after they announced her as an Oscar presenter + the fact that she’s the only previous Oscar host listed as a presenter + she openly said on The View in January that she’d be up for hosting=???”
But, fellow co-host Joy Behar debunked online rumors. During Wednesday’s show, Behar reaffirmed that Goldberg is “on the mend” after battling pneumonia the past several weeks.
“Whoopi is still out. She’s not feeling well and there are all these conspiracy theories on the internet that she’s not really sick. She’s secretly preparing to host the Oscars,” Behar said. “Let me just set the record straight right now, OK?”
Behar quipped that Goldberg is on “maternity leave,” before setting all joking aside.
“She’s actually recovering from pneumonia. That’s what she had. It’s a serious thing,” Behar said. “She’s not really even well enough to host this show right now, much less the Oscars. I saw her last night and she’s very funny still and we had big laughs. She’s getting there.”
Goldberg is no stranger to hosting duties. After winning a best-supporting actress Oscar in 1990 for her work on “Ghost,” Goldberg went on to emcee the Academy Awards four times, most recently in 2002.
USA TODAY reached out to Goldberg’s rep and to the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences for comment.
