The Kent County Sheriff’s Office said the children were all elementary school aged or younger. Kent County Sheriff Michelle Lajoye-Young would not provide more information on the relationships of the deceased, and said her department was still confirming identities.
“Certainly a horrific thing to be called to and my heart goes out to the families involved here and the community,” LaJoye-Young told WOOD. “We’re certainly going to do everything we can to bring this to a quick resolution.”
According to the WOOD report, the sheriff’s office believes there is a second crime scene at an unknown location, based on the investigation of the property.
LaJoye-Young said authorities don’t believe there is a shooter at large. The sheriff told WZZM-TV that a murder-suicide was a possibility, but investigators are keeping an open mind as they proceed.
“It’s always hard when there’s a death in the community, but it’s absolutely the most difficult when kids are involved,” LaJoye-Young told WZZM.
